Underpinning in the construction industry refers to the strengthening and stabilisation of the foundations of a building or structure. It is a method of construction where the depth of the foundations of the building is increased. The soil under the existing foundation is excavated and replaced with new foundation material in phases. Concrete is the most common material used.
